STATEMENT

70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. According to Arthur C Clarke, it should
be inappropriate to call our planet Earth when it is quite clearly Ocean. However,
the sea is a space without recorded history, there are no footprints left upon it, it
consumes and secretes those who come to grief on its surface and the vessels in
which they have sailed. Not monumentalised but perceived as an unknown world,
the sea is a symbolic and metaphorical narrative device rather than a real place. We
know more about the moon than we do about the profound depths of the ocean;
only one-quarter of its species have been identified, and only 5% of the underwater
kingdom has been explored. We are surrounded by it, and yet, we are putting more
effort into the discovery of space than the discovery of the sea. Nevertheless, these
two opposite worlds have many common points. The deep is a place that is utterly
alien to us but unlike outer space it is a part of our planet, and by extension, a part
of us too.

The Sea is the poetic catalyst of Lorie Ballage’s practice. Through different medium,
she navigates around unexplored territories and potentialities to depict the fears and
thrills that arises from uncertainty
