Katy Bentham, Heather Bonnie Reid and Olivia Turner are former Erasmus exchange students from Newcastle University, who came consecutively to the Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen between 2014 and 2016. They had a great time.
Newcastle and Bergen share a rich cultural and trade history linked by their maritime connections to industry and the North Sea. Today, both cities enjoy an expanding contemporary art scene. The initiative which set up the exchange agreement between Newcastle University and KHiB was based upon this relationship as well as the similarities between the structures and teaching methods of their respective Fine Art departments.
Now that the art school has officially merged with the University of Bergen, this show will shed a light on the special relationship between these two institutions. Drawing upon the performative dimensions of their respective practices, Bentham, Reid and Turner will create an exhibition which celebrates their shared experiences of both Bergen and Newcastle and how their time at KHiB has impacted upon their work as three artists at different stages of their professional development.
Situated in Galleri Bokboden, the student-run gallery space, the exhibition will be an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of KHiB and expand upon the possibilities of its continuing relationship with Newcastle
